Soldier’s Angels

Service To Others is emphasized greatly in our homeschool. One of the organizations that our students volunteer for is Soldier’s Angels.

The boys have been members for many years and have enjoyed it very much!

They have made Blankets of Hope for the Combat Support Hospitals. In 2007, they received an email from one of the RN’s letting them know that their shipment of quilts were received by local children who had recently been hospitalized.

I am very proud of them. They have big hearts and willing hands.

Here are some pictures and letters they’ve received.

Blankets of Hope

In addition to Blankets of Hope, they have made 100′s of cooling scarves for summer in Afghanistan and purchased lots of hats and sweats for the winter season.

Making Cooling Scarfs

In 2008, they received a letter of commendation from Patti herself and were extremely thrilled.

Patti sent them magnets to put on the car. Unfortunately, earlier this year someone stole them while our truck was parked at a grocery store.

Here are some of the emails they have received over the years.

Hi JM, JR, and JT,

I was a patient when I got the blanket you sent, but normally I’m a nurse. I work in the intensive care unit with the sickest of the patients. It only took me a couple of days to get better so I could go back to work taking care of people here. Our hosptial is on the airstrip so I see a lot of helicopters and airplanes. All belong to either the Army, Air Force, or Marines. The doctors are just fine. Just doing their doctor thing. Well, right now they’re sleeping because it’s night here,
As for which blanket I got, it was very colorful. I didn’t get the Army chef one. That was given to the little children that came in to the hospital. I love the angels that you all put on the blankets. It is a really nice touch to let the soldiers know that there are angels watching over them. That was a really good idea! The blanket was just the right size. Not too little and not too big.

It’s really hot over here, almost 100 already. Really, really dusty. It’s time for all of the dust storms around here. My allergies are really acting up and I keep sneezing.

I do have a son, but he’s in college. He’s a big boy. He just had a birthday too!!! He had an Army birthday once too. Every birthday I have is an Army one. Especially, when I’m out here in Iraq.

Yes, I have a tv, and doesn’t everybody love Curious George? I know I do.

I would love to get a picture that you drew and when that book is finished I’d love to hear it. I’m sure it’s going to be such an amazing book about soldiers.

Going to get going now. I have to go tend to my patient. Thanks for writing. Take care.

Hi to JM, JR, and JT,

I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know the soldiers love the blankets you sent. You should see how happy they make them to get a little bit of home. Plus, it keeps them really warm at night. We sometimes keep it a little to cold in the hospital.

I also wanted to let you know that I got to feeling bad the other day and was seen in my hospital. I got really cold at about 2AM and found myself cuddled up in the blanket you sent. I want to thank you for that. I also want to thank you for your support of the troops here in Iraq. It means a lot to us.

Thanks again

Hello,
I just wanted to thank you again for everything you are doing, and to let you know that we received 10 boxes the other day! I have separated the stuff for the CSH and the stuff that we can use for the wounded soldiers. We are putting things to good use! Thanks again.

Hi Joyce,

Yes, we’ve ramped up our support of the CSHs (Combat Support Hospitals) in addition to our efforts in Germany and are currently providing over 300 backpacks to ill and wounded Soldiers every month – and each one needs a blanket!

I’ve attached a document about BoH that has both the address in California and the SA Germany address. You can send to either address, but in both cases please include a note with your name and email address to we can acknowledge receipt.

Thanks, and big hugs to you and the boys!
