Homeschooling is a very personal decision. It has worked out very well for our family. I am the predominant teacher while Dad is our substitute teacher and principle when needed.
I’ve been fortunate enough to share experiences with our children that would be sorely missed if we all left the house in the morning, only to gather back in the evening, tired. As the days go fleeting by and they grow up, I hesitate to think what we would have missed if homeschooling had not been an option. They are secure, independent, and happy self-learners. It is difficult to resist expanding your own horizons, as their enthusiasm has a way of rubbing off!
Teaching, being another branch of parenting, has it’s good days and bad days. It takes as much dedication as any other aspect of parenting. As a parent, you come to learn that each day will be filled with insecurities and questions yet equally filled with rewards and answers. Just when a part of me begins to wonder if I should continue, I’ll overhear the excited voices of one of the boys and know – without a shadow of a doubt – definitely – I can and should continue.
If you are in doubt about homeschooling, all I can say is, give it a try – you may discover like I did, How can you “not” homeschool?
And to all of you dedicated teachers out there, both homeschools and schoolhouses – my hat is off to you! It is a tough job that is filled with many blessings.
