CUB

REPORTER

Each week, one of the boys is assigned to be our Cub Reporter. His job is to write a short article about what took place in class that week. The Cub Reporter keeps his notes during the week and on Friday, types a final draft into WordPress. This gives them the opportunity to write using technology, and I can easily proofread the articles before they are published.

Every Friday, a new post is added. You can subscribe via RSS feeds on the bottom right, or check back often to read about life at the Barrett Homeschool!

Monday we started out with a Math worksheet and then we did our Trophies and Handwriting.  Afterward, we did a test on our Reading.  Me and JR are above grade level and JT is right at the end of his grade.  We did our art project on doing a pastel drawing of the Earth from outer space.

On Tuesday we completed all of our subjects including Science.  For Science we did experiments.  The first one was where you take one third cup of water, put an index card on top, and turn it upside down.  It won’t dump the water out because the index card stays because of air pressure pushing it.  The next experiment we filled a bucket with ice water and a coke can with 4 tablespoons of water.  We heated up the can on the stove in a saucepan until it had steam coming out of it’s top.  Then we took it out of the pan cause we are trying to crush it without touching it.  When you are done cooking it you put it in a pie pan upside down and cool it down fast with the ice water, then it should crush and it worked for us.  The can crushed itself into a cube because a little of the steam escaped when we poured ice water on it.  Next time, we will hold the can down a little better.  The air pressure on the sides of the can did push it in tho.

Wednesday everyone was groggy and really wanted to play outside.  We did our Math, Language Arts, and Trophies.  I have memorized my 9′s multiplication facts and now I am moving onto 3′s and JR is moving onto 6′s.  JT is doing 2′s.  We were so groggy we only did 25 out of a 100 math problems on our five minute fact practice.

Thursday we went to Grandma’s house because she was sick.  While we were there, I helped to clean up Grandma’s house.  Pop-pop and Grandma bought us McDonald’s when they got back from the doctor.  I am reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and JR is reading Prisoner of Azkaban and JT is reading Sorcer’s Stone.  I have read all three now.  We watched JK Rowling’s speech to college kids that were graduating.  It was funny but sad when she talked about a guy that lost his Mom.   We also played on Mom’s Ipod Touch, practicing our math facts on PopMath and a monkey’s feet.  Also, on Mr. Swallow’s Fabulous Links site I discovered Coffee Shop.  It’s really fun and if you don’t put the right formula together people puke and you have to get your ratings up really high or else you go bankrupt.

On Friday, we had JR’s 10th Birthday.  We made a delicious cake and he had alot of presents.  Grandma and Pop-pop bought him a year membership to the Atlanta Zoo and we are going to go on Tuesday.    On Saturday, yesterday, we went to Sweetwater Creek State Park.  We met two people that had never seen Osprey’s before.  They were old people, probably in their 50′s, the guy wasn’t too old, around in his 40′s, and when they saw the Osprey hit the water they shocked.  I told them “I bet you’ve never seen that before!”.  They looked at all our pictures and they liked them.  They said that they were going to go up to Maine next week because they heard about all the Osprey’s on the buoy lines.  They said last week they went to Alaska and they saw Bald Eagles everywhere.  They got lots of pictures.

Last week, when we were at Sweetwater Creek State Park, I got a picture of an Osprey soaring.  The park ranger liked it so much he asked me if he could put it on the park website.  They said that they were going out on boats trying to get a picture of them soaring and they never even got any good ones because they were going so fast.  I emailed it to him last night.  We will watch for it to show up on their website.

On Monday, for Language Arts, we watched a funny video about a boy who could not read the word “wet”.  His teacher got so impatient that her head turned into a dragons head and fire flew out of her ears.  He threw a bucket of water on her head.  She was all wet!  It was a claymation video that a class made.  The teacher was not patient, I guess.

I won last week’s Homophone Challenge and got a cool Harry Potter bookmark.

On Tuesday we read our first readers theater script, called The Baker’s Dozen.  A bakers dozen is 13 not 12.  It is a legend about the extra one.  A lady came in and wanted 13 instead of 12 St. Nicholas cookies because she thought the baker should give an extra cookie to be nice to his customers.  He thought it was fair to give her just what she ordered.  No more no less.  He learned otherwise.

Wednesday we started a new bean bag discussion.  We are now reading night of the twisters by:Ivy Ruckman.  We read to page “16″.  We decided to change our Bean Bag Discussion into more of a book club.  We read the same book out loud and talk about it.

Thursday we did another Saxon math timed fact practice sheet.  There were 100 problems and we have 5 minutes to do them.  I got 42 out of 100 in 5 minutes.  That is way more than I did before.  Daddy taught us how to install software, and charge Ipods.  We installed Clue Finders for 4th grade to 6th grade.  Then we played it.  the 5th grade is very hard to do.

Friday we took the day off.

Saturday we went to John Tanner State Park and we saw Blue Jays.  They sounded like Hawks and made the sound like laughing of the Coopers Hawk to scare off other predators.  He made the “kaw” of the Red-Tailed Hawk.

Sunday we went to Sweetwater Creek State Park and it was the best bird day ever.  We saw the Osprey, a ton of ducks, and geese including the Greater White Fronted Goose, Mallards and the Double-Crested Cormorant.

On Monday we did Math,  Language Arts,  and Trophies.  I finished my old Trophies books from last year.  For the Bean Bag Discussion Group I am the Word Wizard and the Illustrator.  As Illustrator, I painted a picture of a passage from the book Tales of Desperaux.

JR and JM went to Brain Pop.   JR ‘s favorite video was Fractions.  JM’s favorite video was  Harry Potter.  My favorite Brain Pop was about Swine Flu.

On Wednesday, JR brought a box of ninjas to class and I liked them.

On Thursday they went to the Digital Image Group meeting and I stayed home with Mom.  We sketched and painted some.  I really like sketching a picture to paint.

Friday, we had a half of day of School then went to Grandma’s house.  We ate McDonalds and watched T.V.  While there, we found a weird bug on Grandma’s Butterfly Bush.

Hummingbird Moth

Does anyone know what this is?  If so, please leave a comment.  That is it for today.  It was a fun week while it lasted.
