Eufala National Wildlife Refuge And Walter F George Sparks Reservoir

Anhinga Yesterday we got up at 5:00 in the morning to go to Eufala National Wildlife Refuge with a friend named Jim Enterkin. When we got there we saw 3 Common Moorhen, 2 Anihinga, 25 Great Egrets, 12 Great Blue Heron, 12 Ring Necked Duck, 2 Canvasback, 3 Bufflehead, 4 Northern Harriers , 3 Red Tailed Hawks, 4 Palm Warblers, 1 Common Grackle, 3 Yellow Rumped Warblers, at least 400 American Coots, 7 Killdeer, 15 Double Crested Cormorant, 4 Northern Shovelers, 20 Ring Billed Gulls, 3 Osprey, 1 Purple Martin, And 1 Bald Eagle. When we got to the dam we were sort of disappointed because we were expecting to see pelicans but they were not there instead we saw 17 cormorants, 2 great cormorants, and 4 great blue herons. But the most frightening thing of the whole trip was that when we were walking the Bradly unit we saw a 5 foot alligator hiss at us and then go into the water, the next thing was that we saw some thing that looked like a alligator that was 12 feet long but we didn’t think one that big could live in Georgia, but when we got home we looked on the computer at the pictures and it was a real alligator.

I imagine those alligators WERE terrifying. You were so close to them, too. It is such a relief to know you made it home in one piece. Next time – NO chicken sandwiches for the road! I’ll pack something else that the alligators won’t like so much – hmmmm – brussel sprout sandwiches maybe…..

You are doing a great job on your blog and your photographs are very beautiful. I’ve never seen so many beautiful birds. You should be very proud, I am! I LOVE YOU!
